Are you in parental burnout? Or perhaps you’re teetering on the edge of burnout. If so, I want you to know: you’re not alone.

I was always looking for the 'right' way to parent, placing huge amounts of pressure on myself to be the 'perfect parent'. Then on top of that I realised I was part of a family that needed to do things differently and that added a whole new level to the stresses and strains.

I slammed my way into burnout, without even realising what it was, or I was in it. Sometimes we know, sometimes we don't, sometimes we don't see it coming and sometimes we do but we can't avoid it, or we ignore it.

Navigating your way round burnout and through burnout is not easy and it takes time. There is no one size fits all or magic wand. BUT........... with knowledge, strategies, a plan and a back up team there is a way.

Meet Liz

Supporting parents and carers in additional needs families with parental burnout, mental health and well being so they can be the parents they want to be.

Liz is an experienced award winning Occupational Therapist (OT) with 25 years of expertise. As someone who is dyslexic and part of a neurodiverse family, Liz brings a unique perspective to her work. She is passionate about collaborating with children, young people, parents and caregivers, supporting them to discover understanding, connection, neuro-affirming and trauma and sensory responsive tailored solutions and support that fits each family's individual needs. She helps parents and carers to regain clarity and confidence in their parenting experience, creating more meaningful moments with their kids, whilst remembering their own well being matters too.

As a parent or carer of a child with additional needs, you play a vital role in your family’s well-being. But often, it’s easy to overlook your own needs—especially when you’re focused on the care and support of others. Many parents and carers find themselves so busy meeting the needs of their children that they put their own health, mental well-being, and happiness at the bottom of the list.

She realised both in her professional practice and with her own children, she was referring to a checklist in her head. This inspired her to create her Essential Behaviour Detective Checklist. This is available as a free PDF. In October 2024 The Untypical OT was chosen by Theo Paphitis as a winner for The Small Business Sunday awards. In February 2025 I was invited to ICC in Birmingham to collect my award presented by Theo himself. It was a wonderful day spending time learning and most importantly getting to meet other small business owners and building connections.
